  • Global Run Culture & Storytelling Event on April 18

Global Run Culture & Storytelling Event on April 18 in SF

Join fellow runners in San Francisco for a run culture and storytelling meetup event!

Ten years ago issue #1 of Like the Wind (LtW) magazine was launched to inspire a global run community. A decade later and the magazine is still committed to telling stories that explore running culture around the world.

To celebrate the milestones of 10 years and 40 editions of the magazine, we are touring the US uncovering reasons Why We Run from LtW readers and runners around the country.

We've teamed up with the Morning Shakeout and Run Local Events in San Francisco, CA to host an evening of global run culture and connect with local runners in the area. Please join us for a live recording of Mario Fraioli's Morning Shakeout podcast as well as an evening of meeting up with fellow runners.

What will happen on the night:

5pm - door open. You can drop bags at the venue

    5:30 - easy-pace guided run for 45 minutes

6:30 - live Podcast recording starts

9pm - end of the evening

Location: Ocean Plant, 800 Great Highway San Francisco, CA 94121

    Free registration available here.

  • California Search & Rescue Seeking Volunteers

California Search & Rescue Recruitment Flyer

CALSAR is a statewide search and rescue unit that responds to mutual aid searches under the California office of emergency service. Being part of the unit is a great opportunity to spend more time outside, learn some cool skills, and give back to the outdoors community!

It's a unique service opportunity that allows for very meaningful impact via helping people on some of their worst days.

Other than passing a fitness test (which consists of doing a 4 mile hike with a 25lb pack in 1 hour and 35 minutes), there are no required qualifications / skills required to join!

Our training consists of roughly 8 weekends (spread from October - April of each year) where we teach all the necessary skills, from basic outdoor survival / camping skills all the way to the first aide and search techniques necessary to go on a search. It's a fun group of people who all really enjoy being outside, and are united by a common mission.

While there are no necessary qualifications / skills, the recruitment process does involve the following:

    • Attend an info sessions (see below)
    • Attend an introduction to navigation course (details not on the website yet but are March 2nd, 9th, and 16th)
    • Passing a fitness qualification (April 6th / 7th or April 13th / 20th)
    • Interviews (April 27th)

If you're interested in learning more, you must attend one of the upcoming information sessions:

  • Remembering Hanako (Hana) Abe

    Run for Hanako Abe

At SF Runs we remember Hanako (Hana) Abe, who passed away at age 27 as a result of a hit-and-run that took place on December 31, 2020. Hana loved running and had run with SF Runs previously.

Hana embodied resilience, bravery, and hope. Hana grew up in Fukushima, Japan, where her family survived the Japanese earthquake and nuclear disaster. Despite this tragedy, Hana continued doing her best in pursuit of her dreams. The fruits of her labors were being accepted to the University of Central Arkansas where she developed a passion for computer science.

Upon graduating, Hana moved to San Francisco in 2018 where she started pursuing her dream as a data engineer. She always had the warmest smile and made friends wherever she went.

On top of being far away from her family, Hana shouldered an enormous amount of responsibility with her father having an aortic dissection and mother’s battle with lung cancer. Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hana continued to display resilience and optimism about the future.

To honor Hana’s memory SF Runs organized a virtual Run for Hanako in January 2021 in partnership with some of Hana’s friends, who launched a GoFundMe to assist her family.

Hana's family and friends were moved by people from around the world who shared heartfelt messages and beautiful photos from their Run for Hanako activities. Although the Run for Hanako has concluded we will continue to remember Hana and know that her spirit will be with us always.

    Ahmaud Aubrey Dedication Run

    broken image

    Join our virtual event here

Going for a run should not result in being shot to death.

But that is what happened to Ahmaud Aubrey. This is a tragedy and should never happen again.

Friday, May 8th, would have been Ahmaud's birthday.

We have an opportunity to add our miles and voices to those working to ensure that his story is heard, support is given to his family, and justice is served.

There is a lot more work to be done.
